BIOS focuses on a spectrum of psychological research on performance. How can athletes heighten focus? How do we remain present in the moment? Can mindfulness and meditation practice make a significant contribution in athletics? How can athletes be clutch performers? Alongside these and other psychology of sport questions, we learn about broader empirical investigations into athletes’ emotional and psychological well-being.

Trailblazing in Sports Project
BIOS focuses on research into how athletes, teams, and organizations blaze new trails in their fields. Three areas are of particular interest to us. First, we examine how teams and organizations can apply data science and mathematical principles to their work. Second, we consider research on innovation, including new technologies and tools in sport, organizational performance, and broadening opportunities for sport participation. Finally, we look in depth at sport-specific data.

Representation of Sport in Society
Sports transcend the time we spend training, competing, and cheering. Sports shape our everyday lives – what we watch, read, hear, feel, and believe – more than ever before. BIOS focuses on diverse representations of sport in society. From media studies and journalism, we consider how the framing and promotion of sports shape our perceptions and behaviors. We examine intersections between social media and sport, including the ways individual and collective identities in sport are cultivated on public platforms. And we also look to the field of art, learning how creative works convey deep meanings of sport, inspire new possibilities, and bridge cultural and disciplinary boundaries.
