In conjunction with HoopsHome, a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting international basketball athletes as they make the transition to the U.S., we explored the varied functions of basketball-centric academies throughout Senegal. Through interviews and observations with administrators, coaches, and families, we found transformative influences that academies have on young people and communities. All academies had noted success in developing several athletes who eventually played collegiately or professionally in the U.S. However, each academy had unique purposes, approaches, and resources to support their athletes. Additionally, we explored motivations and the familial impact of having a son or daughter migrate to the U.S. for academic and athletic opportunities.
